The Woman Who Rides the Beast

Ask most Christians who the beast of Revelation is, and you will hear a guess. A supercomputer. The United Nations. A global bank. Whichever leader they fear most this year.

The guesses change with every generation. Each new crisis produces a new candidate, and each candidate fades when the crisis passes. Headlines cannot interpret prophecy.

Scripture does not change. Revelation was written to be understood. Let the Bible define its own terms. Then let history show where they point.

In prophecy, a beast is a king and the kingdom he rules. Revelation’s beast is a political-military leader heading a revived Roman empire. A second beast, the false prophet, is a religious leader who turns the world to worship him. A woman rides the beast: a false church allied with both. This essay shows from your Bible who they are, and why their union ends when Yeshua (Jesus) returns.

A Beast Is a King and His Kingdom

An angel told Daniel that his four beasts “are four kings” (Daniel 7:17). The fourth is “a fourth kingdom on earth” (Daniel 7:23). The symbol covers the ruler and his realm: Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome.

John’s beast combines features of Daniel’s first three beasts. It is Rome, absorbing the empires before it. The dragon, Satan (Revelation 12:9), “gave him his power, his throne, and great authority” (Revelation 13:2). His number “is the number of a man” (Revelation 13:18).

Rome has fallen and revived before. Its final revival is future. Ten kings “will give their power and authority to the beast” (Revelation 17:13). One man will lead them.

The Second Beast Is a False Prophet

John saw another beast that “had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon” (Revelation 13:11). His lamb’s horns imitate Christ. His voice serves Satan.

He “causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast” (Revelation 13:12). He works great signs (verse 13). Revelation later names him “the false prophet who worked signs in his presence” (Revelation 19:20).

One leader commands armies. The other commands worship. They work as allies.

The Woman Is a False Church

When Israel turned from God, He said she “played the harlot” (Jeremiah 3:6). Paul wrote to the Church: “I have betrothed you to one husband” (2 Corinthians 11:2). Both passages use marriage to picture God’s bond with His people. Revelation’s harlot is the reverse: a church unfaithful to Christ.

This harlot sits on “seven mountains” and is “that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth” (Revelation 17:9, 18). In John’s day, that city was Rome.

When the empire fell in the West, Rome’s church remained. In A.D. 800, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor. A religious leader crowned a political one. Daniel adds a mark: a power that would “intend to change times and law” (Daniel 7:25). The Change No Verse Authorizes (Week 31) traced how Sunday replaced the Sabbath through custom, civil law, and church council.

Taken together, these marks lead us to identify the woman with the Roman Catholic Church. Scripture does not print the name.

The woman is the religious institution in this alliance. We understand the false prophet to be its final pope, directing worship toward the political beast.

God calls His people out: “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins” (Revelation 18:4). Many sincere people stand inside, unaware.

Why This Matters for the Kingdom

This alliance counterfeits what God has promised: one world government joined to one worldwide religion. The ten kings “will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings” (Revelation 17:14).

The true union of King and Church comes when Christ returns. Those who refuse the counterfeit now are training to serve in the original.

Conclusion

The beast is a man who will rule a revived Roman empire. The false prophet is a religious leader who will turn the world to worship him. The woman is a false church joined to them both.

Religious claims and great signs will make this alliance persuasive. They will not make it faithful to Christ. Learn the marks, and you can refuse it. The ten kings will turn on her and destroy her (Revelation 17:16).

Her judgment comes in one hour (Revelation 18:10). The Lamb’s reign has no end.
