When Sin Gets a Standing Ovation
When mainstream media starts glorifying “non-stop debauchery” and one-night stands, we’re not just watching culture decay — we’re watching sin get a standing ovation.
Debauchery means reckless indulgence in sensual pleasures, especially sexual. What Scripture once condemned, the culture now calls “freedom,” “healing,” or “self-love.”
Take, for example, actress Charlize Theron, who openly shared on the Call Her Daddy podcast that she’s having the “best sex of her life” at 49 — including a one-night stand with a 26-year-old. Her tone was lighthearted and celebratory.
Or journalist Glynnis MacNicol, who wrote in Good Housekeeping about her summer in Paris, filled with “sunrise swims, shiraz, and sex,” painting indulgence as the ultimate form of self-discovery.
What used to be whispered in shame is now posted for likes — worn like a badge of empowerment.
The Cultural Hypocrisy No One Wants to Admit
Imagine this headline instead:
“Middle-aged man has best sex of his life with a 20-something model — calls it self-discovery.”
Outrage would erupt. He’d be labeled a predator, a creep, a sad old playboy. Feminists would cry foul. And rightly so — if it were just another story of selfish indulgence.
But reverse the genders?
Charlize Theron sleeps with a 26-year-old? “Go girl,” says the media.
Same act. Different reaction.
This double standard isn’t just about fairness. It’s about ideology — one that frames sexual freedom as healing for women, and toxic for men. But the Bible doesn’t judge sin by gender.
“For there is no partiality with God.” — Romans 2:11
Sin Isn’t Just in the Headlines — It’s in Our Homes
The bigger issue isn’t what celebrities do — it’s how ordinary people imitate them.
Today, sexual sin isn’t just glorified in magazines. It’s normalized in everyday life:
- Premarital sex is no longer taboo. Even Christian teens and young adults think it’s harmless if it’s “consensual” or “loving.”
- Living together without marriage is seen as practical — not sinful.
- Online sex, sexting, and phone sex offer pleasure without commitment — undermining the purpose of marriage altogether.
- Many say, “We don’t need a wedding to prove our love.” But love that refuses covenant is not love — it’s rebellion dressed up in romance.
“Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” — Hebrews 13:4
It’s not about whether you believe in marriage. It’s about what God says is sin.
And this isn’t just a women’s issue. Men are equally guilty.
Far too many men treat women as disposable, chase pleasure without responsibility, and abandon the very families they helped create. Porn addiction, emotional detachment, and a “player” mindset are just as toxic as sexual rebellion masquerading as empowerment. God holds men and women equally accountable — not just for what we do with our bodies, but for what we encourage, tolerate, and pursue in others.
“Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.” — Ephesians 5:6
Casual Sex Has Casualties
Behind every feel-good headline or “liberated” lifestyle are real consequences:
Regret. Fatherless children. Broken trust. And yes — abortion.
Abortion isn’t just a political issue. It’s often the tragic result of sex without commitment or covenant.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, the majority of women who seek abortion are unmarried — including those cohabiting — and cite timing (36%), financial hardship (40%), and relationship problems (31%) as key reasons.¹
These aren’t always “casual” in a flippant sense, but they reflect a culture that has separated sex from marriage, and pleasure from responsibility.
As one study put it, decisions are often driven by “multiple, interrelated factors,” but rarely by trauma or danger. In many cases, sex was pursued with no serious intent to build a family — just chemistry, feelings, or convenience.
The unborn child doesn’t suffer because of violence — but because of pleasure pursued without holiness.
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” — Galatians 6:7
“She who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.” — 1 Timothy 5:6
Sin, Rebranded
It used to be taboo. Then it became tolerated. Now it’s trendy — praised as maturity, healing, and growth. Sadly, much of our culture has rebranded rebellion — and now applauds what once brought shame.
But truth doesn’t evolve with culture.
“Flee sexual immorality.” — 1 Corinthians 6:18
“Be holy, for I am holy.” — 1 Peter 1:16
You can dress sin in Parisian wine and self-care slogans — it’s still sin.
And it still leads to death.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ [Yahshua] our Lord.” — Romans 6:23
The Kingdom Perspective
Christ didn’t die so we could “find ourselves” through hookups or healing through indulgence.
He died to save us from sin, not to celebrate it.
He calls us to dignity, not debauchery.
To holiness, not hookup culture.
“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit [which] is in you… and you are not your own?” — 1 Corinthians 6:19–20
The world says: “Indulge.”
The Kingdom says: “Overcome.”
Don’t let media, emotions, or culture redefine sin as self-care.
Call it what it is — and repent while there’s still time.
Because in the Kingdom to come, holiness will never go out of style.
