Who Sits Between the Cherubim?
For centuries, artists have painted the Ark of the Covenant as a golden chest flanked by two cherubim. But the most important detail isn’t the gold—or the craftsmanship.
It’s who was there.
“The LORD of hosts, who dwells between the cherubim.” — 1 Samuel 4:4
So who is this Being? God the Father? The One who became Yahshua the Messiah? Or both?
The God Israel Knew Was the Word
Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong taught—and Scripture confirms—that the One who spoke to Moses, led Israel by fire and cloud, and “dwelt between the cherubim” was not God the Father, but the Word—the divine Being who later became Yahshua (Jesus Christ).
Referring to His Father in heaven, Christ Himself declared:
“You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.” — John 5:37
Yet ancient Israel heard God’s voice and saw His glory. They stood before Him at Sinai. They followed His fiery presence. They received His law.
That means the YHWH they worshiped—the LORD of the Old Testament—was the pre-incarnate Christ.
The Apostle Paul made this plain:
“That Rock was Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 10:4
The God who gave manna and water in the wilderness was the same Being who would later give His own life for the world.
The Mercy Seat: Where Heaven Touched Earth
The Ark of the Covenant wasn’t just sacred furniture—it was a throne. A physical representation of the Father’s heavenly throne.
God promised Moses:
“There I will meet with you, and I will commune with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim.” — Exodus 25:22
The Being who appeared there—the radiant Shekinah glory—was the Son, acting with the Father’s full authority.
In person and manifestation: the Christ. In authority and representation: the Father’s throne.
That’s why Christ could say, “I and My Father are one” (John 10:30)—not the same person, but perfectly united in purpose, will, and glory.
Two in the God Family
The Bible reveals not a Trinity but two divine Beings—one God Family (Elohim):
- God the Father – The unseen Supreme Authority dwelling in unapproachable light.
- The Word (Logos) – The visible, speaking One who became Yahshua the Messiah.
Together, They form the eternal Family into which humanity is destined to be born (Romans 8:14–17; 1 John 3:1–2).
The Father remained transcendent and hidden. The Word was visible and relational—the bridge between the unseen God and His creation.
So Who Sits Between the Cherubim?
The One who became Yahshua the Messiah.
The Word, the Spokesman, the visible LORD who represented the invisible Father.
When Israel bowed before the Ark, they worshiped in the presence of the pre-incarnate Christ, who communed with Moses “from above the mercy seat.”
The cherubim on the Ark reflected the heavenly throne room where cherubim still cover the Father’s glory (Ezekiel 10; Revelation 4).
It wasn’t symbolic—it was real. The Ark was where heaven touched earth.
The Throne Is Not Empty
Between the cherubim on earth, Christ revealed the Father’s glory. Between the cherubim in heaven, He still does.
Today, that same Being sits at the right hand of the Father—still our Mediator, still our High Priest, still the One who reveals the Father to us (Hebrews 4:14–16; 1 Timothy 2:5).
And soon, He will return—not as a hidden presence in a tabernacle, but as the reigning King of Kings, seated on the very throne the Ark once symbolized.
The One who once dwelt between the cherubim will soon reign between the nations.
The throne was never empty. It revealed the Word. And the Word became flesh to show us the way home.

The One between the cherubim was the pre-incarnate Christ—personally present as the Word, representing the Father’s throne and authority. Israel’s God was humanity’s future Savior, bridging heaven and earth from the very beginning.
