Most Churches Have No Real Authority—Does Yours?
What if the structure of your church looks biblical—but isn’t?
Across the world, churches claim to act “under Christ’s authority.” Yet most operate by human politics, denominational boards, or charismatic personalities rather than the government of God revealed in Scripture.
The uncomfortable truth: not every church that calls itself “God’s Church” actually functions under His government.
The Bible reveals that Christ set a very specific government in His Church—hierarchical, Spirit-led, servant in character, and apostolic in foundation (Ephesians 2:20). When churches drift from this pattern, they may still look religious but they no longer exercise true divine authority. The question every believer must ask: is my church aligned with God’s government—or man’s?
1. Christ Is the Head—Not Committees or Charisma
Paul declared that Christ is “the head of the body, the church” (Colossians 1:18). Yet in practice, many churches replace His authority with boards, votes, or personal popularity.
When decisions are driven by majority vote or by one dominant personality, the result is human government in religious clothing. True authority flows downward from Christ—not upward from democracy.
2. The Apostolic Pattern Still Stands
At the start, the Church was “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ [Yahshua the Messiah] Himself being the chief cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:20). Christ appointed apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to equip the saints (Ephesians 4:11–12).
These roles were not optional titles but divinely set offices. When churches downplay or erase them, they lose the very structure God intended.
3. Servant Leadership vs. Authoritarian Control
Christ warned His disciples not to lead like worldly rulers who “lord it over” their people (Matthew 20:25–26). God’s government is hierarchical, yes—but its spirit is service, not domination.
When leaders silence questions, crush initiative, or exclude faithful members without explanation, that is not God’s authority. That is counterfeit control. The test is simple: does the leadership produce humility, service, and encouragement—or fear, politics, and suppression?
4. Counterfeit Governments Abound
History—and recent experience—show that many Church of God organizations mimic the form of divine government while practicing human dominance. The abuses described by faithful members worldwide prove that claiming divine authority does not equal living it.
Scripture warns: “By their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7:20). The fruit of God’s government is order, peace, and encouragement—never confusion, exclusion, or fear.
5. True Government Prepares Us for the Kingdom
The reason this matters is eternal. The Church is training to rule with Christ in His Kingdom (Revelation 5:10). If we cannot recognize and submit to God’s true government now, how can we expect to share His authority then?
Every congregation is a testing ground. Are we being prepared as future kings and priests—or being distracted by human politics masquerading as divine order?

God’s government is not a slogan. It is the living authority of Christ expressed through His chosen offices and His Spirit-led people. Most churches today—yes, even many who claim “the truth”—do not reflect this pattern.
