The Shocking Destiny of Mankind
Why were you born?
Ask a hundred Christians why God created humanity, and you will hear a hundred small answers. To worship Him. To love Him. To go to heaven. To escape hell. Each answer treats human existence as a test with a pass/fail outcome — heaven or hell, in or out.
But Scripture describes something far larger. The Bible does not present man as a finished product. It presents man as a beginning — created with a destiny so staggering that most theologians have refused to teach it plainly. It is not about going somewhere when you die. It is about becoming something you are not yet.
Scripture reveals the central reason humanity exists: God is reproducing Himself. Human beings were designed to be born — through resurrection — into the very Family of God as spirit-composed sons and daughters, sharing His nature and ruling with Christ forever. This is not metaphor. It is the plain teaching of Genesis, the Psalms, the Gospels, and the Epistles when read together.
Humanity Was Made in God’s Image for a Reason
Genesis 1:26 records God saying, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.” Most read this as a comment on intelligence or moral capacity. It is more than that. The Hebrew words tselem (image) and demuth (likeness) describe form and resemblance — the kind a son bears to his father.
Genesis 5:3 uses the exact same words when Adam fathered Seth “in his own likeness, after his image.” The parallel is deliberate. God did not create humanity as pets or servants. He created us as a kind of being capable of becoming what He is. As we established in “Born Again: What It Means (And What It Doesn’t)” (Week 13), the new birth is the moment that potential becomes reality.
The Psalms and Hebrews Say It Plainly
Psalm 8:4–6 asks, “What is man that You are mindful of him? … You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands.”
Hebrews 2:6–8 quotes this passage and adds the stunning commentary: “But now we do not yet see all things put under him.” Not yet. The writer is saying the destiny described in Psalm 8 has not been fulfilled in any human except one — Christ.
And then comes verse 10: God is “bringing many sons to glory.” Many sons. Plural. Brought to the same glory Christ now possesses.
Romans 8 Removes All Doubt
Paul makes the destiny explicit. Romans 8:29 calls Christ “the firstborn among many brethren” — language that only makes sense if many more sons are coming. Verses 14–19 add that those led by God’s Spirit are “sons of God” and “joint heirs with Christ,” sharing the same inheritance He received. Then verse 19: “The earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.” Creation itself is waiting for this birth.
1 John 3:2 closes the loop: “Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him.” Like Him. Not similar to. Not symbolic of. Like the resurrected, glorified Christ described in Revelation 1:13–16.
Why This Matters For the Kingdom
This is the destiny mainstream Christianity buried. The Kingdom of God is not a place souls float to after death. It is a Family-government that will rule the earth and eventually the universe (Revelation 5:10; 1 Corinthians 6:2–3). God is not collecting worshipers for an eternal church service. He is training future kings, priests, judges, and administrators who will share His throne.
Every trial you endure, every act of obedience, every refinement of character is preparing you for actual responsibility in that government. You are not preparing to escape the world. You are preparing to help govern it. “Ruling With Christ in the Millennium” (Week 47) and “Life in the World Tomorrow” (Week 48) will describe what that rulership looks like. But none of it makes sense without grasping what you were made to become.
Conclusion
The shocking destiny of mankind is not heaven. It is sonship — full, literal, spirit-composed sonship in the Family of God. Mainstream Christianity reduced this to a sentimental metaphor and lost the entire purpose of human existence in the process. The result is billions of believers who have no idea why they were born or what God is actually doing with them. Scripture leaves no such confusion.
You were not created merely to be saved.
You were created to become.
